Future of Diagnosis for ADHD in DSM-V, 2011?

What is the future of Diagnosis for ADHD? The DSM-V, the mental health handbook authored by members of the American Psychological Association will be updated in 2011. What might ADHD look like in the new diagnosis?

Some professors are suggesting the following symptoms for ADHD diagnosis in DSM-V...

Person has at least 6 of the following symptoms and these symptoms have been going on for a minimum of six months and the behaviors have been maladaptive and socially inappropriate for the person's age.

The person exhibiting the behaviors is often:

  • easily distracted from task by stimuli external to one's self or by intruding thoughts that are not relevant to the situation

  • impulsively makes decisions

  • experiences a difficult time stopping behaviors or actions that 'should' be stopped - appropriate to the situation

  • begins projects without studying the directions carefully

  • has poor follow through on commitments to others

  • experiences difficulty in ordering tasks sequentially

  • speeds in a vehicle, much faster than others

  • cannot sustain attention on task

  • experiences difficulty if asked to organize activities for self or others

In addition to the above ADHD symptoms, there are 4 more requirements that must be present for awarding a diagnosis of ADHD in DSM-V:

1. The person would have to have some of the symptoms above before driving age (16 yrs.)

2. Some impairment in functioning needs to exist in two or more environmental settings (work, school, play, relationships, etc.)

3. There must be solid evidence of profound impairment in social, educational, domestic, occupational, and or community functioning for the ADHD diagnosis to be made.

4. The symptoms above aren't the product of another developmental disorder, schizophrenia, or other psychotic disorder, and cannot be better accounted for by another disorder.

To sum it up...

ADHD Kids are not bad kids. We're kids, and adults now, looking to experience life like the rest of you - with the ability to attenuate to subjects we're focused on for minutes at a time - hours at a time if that's possible. We need our parents to notice that we're not "getting it" and to find out why. To CARE why.

ADHD is highly treatable and easy to recognize. No brain surgery necessary. Please do what you can to help those that might not recognize the disorder in their own children.
