ADHD ToddlersToddlers with ADHD are tough to diagnose... and there's a good reason for that... Some parents would like to diagnose even toddlers with ADHD. Is it possible? No. According to the DSM-IV -the American Psychological Association's bible for diagnosing behavioral disorders, a toddler cannot be diagnosed with ADHD, autism, or any behavioral disorder. If your toddler displays ADHD - ADD symptoms early on please don't get worked up about it. Childhood is a time of profound change in nearly all behavioral variables. Behavior is influenced by genetics and environment. Both contribute substantially to the toddler's development and both can change with time. Toddlers and preschoolers should be observed for symptoms of ADHD and other behavioral disorders so you can track over time - which behaviors change? Which disappear? Which are new and override others? Tremendous changes take place in toddlers as they mature into preschoolers, pre-teens, and teens. Don't jump the gun by assigning behavioral disorders to infants - they'll change, most of them will change and never warrant a diagnosis. Some throw around a figure that 1 out of 25 persons in the USA are diagnosable as sufferers of ADHD according to clinical definitions. Later on, in early adolescence you can have your child examined for ADHD and see if he or she warrants a clinical diagnosis or not. Probably - not!
